Travelling route from the south by Sognefjorden or the north by Førde
You can start where it suits you best, depending on what direction you are travelling from.
Start your journey in Balestrand with cider tasting at Ciderhuset. Join their guided cider tasting, order à la carte from their menu featuring local produce and international inspirations, and bring home cider (up to 22% ABV) from their farmshop. Visit the Norwegian museum of Travel and Tourism or take a walk along the fjord and the dragestil (“dragon style”) houses from the art colony of the 1800s.
From Balestrand you take the Fv13 along Sværefjorden and Vetlefjorden and continue up the nine hairpin turns. Utsikten (“The View”) at the top is a must see-attraction. Lunch on the mountain at Heidi and Sigurd’s Flatheim, and enjoy a gourmet sandwich with locally sourced smoked salmon and beverage from Balholm, or a piece of homemade cake. They have a varied selection of cakes every day, and a kiosk/ farmshop with souvenirs.
Safe and sound down from the mountain you will find Hestad Chapel – a church dating back to the 12th century. It is protected to preserve the characteristic cultural history and natural qualities of the area. The church is open the whole month of July. All season long it is also a perfect picnic spot to enjoy packed treats of baked goods and coffee, or a place to experience the tranquillity, wander barefoot in the sand by the water and take a refreshing dip.
As close as possible to the mountains and the rapids: Flatheim
By the fjord and close to Balestrand in the south: Dragsvik Fjordhotell
In Sande and Førde in the north: Sande Kro og Hotell and Førde Camping and guest house
Gaularfjellet is a great experience if you have your own car or you can sign up for an organised and guided tour to Utsikten arranged by Balestrand Taxi.
